If you are reading this, the chances are high that you attend an English speaking church. Across Canada, many praise God, pray and sing hymns and choruses in other languages. In my current on-line seminary course, several other languages are the language of worship. In one church, they use three languages: Mandarin, Cantonese and English. Korean, Spanish and Portuguese are the languages of choice in others. I recently attended a baptism service where an English congregation and a Mandarin congregation met at the same time. I was there for a baptism done in Spanish.
Some of these churches are relatively large but many are small. Some are independent and others are sponsored by English congregations or welcomed in their buildings. In all of these church families, children will grow and want to be in English language services. Who invests time and energy in Ethnic churches? Who reaches out to migrant workers and new immigrants and becomes the feet and hands of God? Are there many first language English people who buy and donate Spanish language bibles, or drive people to a service that they themselves don’t understand? Who cooks a meal and serves it at a church where they can’t speak the language?
