Over the years I have seen some very interesting t-shirt and sweatshirt slogans. I have laughed when a Dominican wearing a t-shirt that says, “Hug me” gets hugged and she doesn’t know why. The most recent one to catch my attention was one I saw in a store in Flint, Michigan. It had four words – the first line said WAKE UP, the second SERVE and the third REPEAT. I found this sweat shirt a couple of weeks later under the Christmas tree and this morning I wore it to church.
Today is New Year’s Day. The pastor challenged us to start each day reading scripture to be committed to giving God first priority on a daily basis and to praise his Holy name. Waking up with scripture is not just an academic activity. Our God wants our very best; he wants our worship, our hymns of praise and he wants our service. He will refresh us and renew us and strengthen us. He will call us to love his word and to begin the day in it. He will give us the energy to then go and serve and to repeat the pattern of word, worship and praise so that we can rise up as he promises in Isaiah 40:31 “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
So WAKE UP, SERVE, REPEAT.
