“The poor you will always have with you.” These words of Jesus should consistently call us to action to assist the poor.
A very small group of leaders in a rural community in Mexico when given the opportunity to bless their community, chose to bless 18 of the poorest families with a dispensa – we would call it a benevolent food package. Pastor Armando and his wife and son and the members of two other families had a wonderful times as they drove around in the back of a pick-up truck dropping of a package with rice, beans, sugar, salt, pasta, coffee and laundry detergent etc. At each stop, mothers were delighted with the gift and children received toys, stuffed animals or dolls or cars and truck.
There were smiles all over: at the grocery store where 18 packages of cereal, cooking oil and cookies etc. were piled in shopping baskets. There were smiles as the prayer group walked around a table filling each of the food packs. There were bigger smiles as the food was delivered but the best smiles were as the children of the distributing team handed gifts to other children. Many children could hardly believe they were receiving a toy. It was wonderful to see those kids carry their new toy as they walked through town on the way to school the next morning.
